It's the last week of the competition, and the bloggers have weighed in. Now, what will the voters decide? Here is where our analysis stands on the eve of the final David vs. David showdown:
Since the top three contestants were determined the week of May 14, influential blogs in aggregate have pegged David Archuleta to take home this year’s title. This wasn't always so obvious however - up until week six, Archuleta was trailing in the amount of overall buzz, post over post. The influencers always favored "dark horse" David Cook however. At this stage in the game, influencers posit that Archuleta's consistency - and the tween vote - will earn him the crown in the end. David Cook's rabid cougar following may end up being more of a curse than a blessing.
What else did we learn?
-Syesha Mercado took everyone by surprise. Her small but passionate base of influential bloggers generated 3x the posts about her performances - all positive - than her competitors. Voters and judges were unimpressed initially (she was always a Bottom 3 player) but in the end she was the last female standing the week before the finals. Did influential bloggers sense something fans didn't?
-Influencers don't always know best. Lots of well connected bloggers talking about you? Check. High frequency of posts positively reacting to your performances? Check. Carly Smithson had it all when it came to the influential bloggers' hearts - but not the viewer votes. Despite positive buzz she got kicked off the competition the week of April 21.
-Influencers turned on Brooke White first. We'll never know if the influencers were explicitly responsible for impacting voters - but they may have had a hand in shaping the outcome. Similar to Syesha, the influencers appeared to be one step ahead of the voting public when it came to this singer's fate. Influential blogs, fans and judges alike loved Brooke's style and personality for the first few weeks. Then blog commentary turned nasty after her performance of Mariah Carey's "Hero." Two weeks later she was off the show.
Michael Johns’ exit upset fans and set the blogosphere on fire. The week of March 26, after his rendition of Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” Michael Johns went from being the hands-down fan favorite to being voted off two weeks later. Johns generated over 1,000 influential posts after his departure, many lamenting the show’s overall loss of sex appeal and most outraged that a much less impressive, Kristy Lee Cook, remained.
Buzz wasn’t always around performances. Poor Paula Abdul – her flubs made more news than her first music video in 15 years. She set the blogosphere afire by judging two of Jason Castro's songs when he only sang one. Check out the most influential post in the Paula Abdul conversation from The Hollywood Gossip blog.
